TIFF Announces Opening and Closing Night Films for 49th Festival

The 2024 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is set to launch with David Gordon Green’s Nutcrackers and conclude with Rebel Wilson’s directorial debut The Deb. Both films will make their World Premieres at Roy Thomson Hall as part of the Gala programme, sponsored by Dyson.

Opening Night Film: Nutcrackers

Director: David Gordon Green

Starring: Ben Stiller

Synopsis: Nutcrackers follows Mike (Ben Stiller), a work-focused individual who finds his life turned upside down when he becomes the unexpected guardian of his lively orphaned nephews.

Closing Night Film: The Deb

Director: Rebel Wilson

Synopsis: The Deb is an original musical comedy set in a small Australian town, where two teenage cousins embark on a journey to find self-acceptance and a date for the Debutante Ball.

“This year’s Festival is shaping up to be a star-studded event with highly anticipated films that reflect the world around us with humor and empathy, like our Opening and Closing Night selections, Nutcrackers and The Deb,” said Anita Lee, Chief Programming Officer, TIFF. “TIFF aims to showcase both returning and first-time directors on a grand stage, and we are excited for fans to experience these two films — and the many diverse works premiering in between.”

Tickets for TIFF ’24 will go on sale to TIFF Members by level starting Friday, August 16. The full Festival schedule will be announced on Tuesday, August 13.
