Chaitanya Chinchlikar urges a phased rollout, stronger faculty training, and deep industry ties to ensure India’s creator labs deliver real skills and opportunities nationwide

India’s plan to embed creator labs in schools and colleges has moved closer to reality with a detailed rollout roadmap and clear-eyed warnings from industry and academic leaders. At a recent post-Budget webinar on the creative economy, Chaitanya Chinchlikar, CTO of Whistling Woods International, emerged as a central voice, outlining actionable outcomes and highlighting potential roadblocks for the ambitious initiative. He spelled out outcomes and suggestions that emerged from voices of thought leaders from the AVGC breakout session.

Labs to Complete Education in the Age of AI

At the session on content creator labs and curriculum, Chaitanya and stakeholders agreed that the labs could “ensure completeness of education” for students navigating an AI-driven world. The consensus was that, as automation rises, human skills such as creative, critical, narrative, and design thinking will grow even more vital.

By embedding structured creative practice into mainstream education, the labs promise to complement academic learning with expressive and problem-solving abilities that machines cannot easily replicate.

Stakeholders also highlighted the labs’ role in deepening students’ appreciation for Bharatiya narrative traditions, folk art, and music. This cultural grounding could help Indian storytelling and visual styles stand apart globally, while equipping students with contemporary media and entertainment skills.

Phased Rollout: Start Small, Scale Smart

A phased, pilot-driven rollout was one of the group’s central recommendations. Rather than an immediate nationwide launch, the plan proposes beginning with select institutions, piloting teacher training and curriculum models, and expanding based on feedback and readiness.

The final phase envisions national saturation, with a seamless pathway from foundational creative education in schools to specialized higher education and careers in media, entertainment, and the broader creative economy.

Chaitanya emphasized that this staged approach is essential for maintaining quality and scalability.

Curriculum, Capacity, and Infrastructure: Building the Foundation

The academic framework for the labs centers on developing structured modules in AVGC (animation, VFX, gaming, comics) and allied domains, aligned with the National Education Policy’s multidisciplinary and design-thinking principles. However, stakeholders flagged faculty capacity as both a critical outcome and a major bottleneck. Training and certification programs—including industry-supported “train-the-trainer” initiatives—are seen as vital to address the acute shortage of skilled faculty in creative disciplines.

Reliable infrastructure—electricity, broadband, and quality hardware and software—was also identified as a prerequisite, especially to prevent urban-rural disparities in learning quality.

Industry Collaboration: The Crucial Link

Industry involvement was described as non-negotiable. Stakeholders called for companies to provide mentorship, real-world projects, internships, and curriculum input, ensuring that labs remain closely aligned with evolving industry needs.

Beyond the classroom, the vision is for institutions and industry to collaborate on live projects, incubation, and entrepreneurship, turning campuses into launchpads for jobs and start-ups in media, entertainment, gaming, and related fields.

Inclusion and Awareness: Reaching Beyond the Metros

Ensuring that tier-2 and tier-3 cities are at the heart of the rollout, not an afterthought, is a key design principle. Identifying pilot and expansion institutions will factor in digital infrastructure and regional representation, aiming to widen access to creative education and digital opportunities nationwide.

Yet, participants cautioned that much creative talent resides in smaller cities that currently lack industry exposure and training. Without targeted outreach and infrastructure support, the labs risk reinforcing existing urban concentration.

Raising awareness among students, parents, and educators was described as “possibly the most important” strand of the plan. Communication campaigns are needed to inform families about the creative economy’s career prospects and the educational pathways available, as limited awareness and parental acceptance could otherwise limit uptake—even with well-equipped labs.

Implementation Risks Remain

Summing up, Chaitanya said the creator labs have the potential to complete the education mix, expand higher-education and career pathways, and strengthen India’s narrative traditions if implemented with care.

However, he cautioned that success hinges on addressing four intertwined challenges: faculty shortages, uneven infrastructure, low career awareness, and limited opportunities in smaller cities—all requiring deep, ongoing industry engagement.

The post-Budget dialogue, he concluded, has produced a shared roadmap: start with targeted pilots, invest in curriculum and teacher capacity, standardize infrastructure, embed industry deeply, and communicate aggressively to families and students. The next steps will determine whether India’s creative talent can truly flourish across every corner of the country.
