For IFFI 2024, Goa Extends a Warm Welcome

The 55th edition of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) will be held in Goa, which will once again serve as a captivating backdrop. This will ensure that the festival remains a significant event on the calendar of the international film industry

As the golden sun sets over the picturesque shores of Goa, a cinematic extravaganza is set to unfold, inviting film enthusiasts, industry professionals, and cultural aficionados from across the globe to partake in the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI). Scheduled from November 20th to 28th, 2024, this prestigious festival promises to be a grand celebration of global storytelling, cinematic innovation, and cultural exchange.

A Legacy of Excellence

Since its inception in 1952, IFFI has established itself as a cornerstone of film festivals in South Asia, accredited by the International Federation of Film Producers’ Associations (FIAPF). Over the decades, IFFI has been at the forefront of showcasing exceptional films from around the world, providing a platform for filmmakers and cineastes to connect and share their craft. The festival’s move to Goa in 2004 has cemented its status as a premier destination for cinema lovers, with its stunning coastal setting providing a backdrop that enhances the festival’s vibrant atmosphere.

Globally-acclaimed filmmaker Shekhar Kapur has been selected to serve as the festival director for the International Film Festival of India 2024, which is an exciting development. Kapur, who is well-known for his ground breaking work in Indian cinema as well as international cinema, brings a wealth of experience as well as a new perspective to the festival. His appointment is a significant step towards elevating the international standing of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), which promises to deliver dynamic and innovative programming that honours the diverse film cultures of the world.

Highlights of the 55th Edition

This year’s IFFI promises to be a spectacular affair, with a rich tapestry of events and activities designed to captivate and inspire:

Gala Opening and Closing Ceremonies:

The festival will kick off with a grand opening ceremony, featuring red carpet events and celebrations that set the tone for a week of cinematic excellence. The closing ceremony will be a fitting finale, celebrating the best in film with the prestigious awards.

Best Debut Director of Indian Feature Film Category:

With an aim to promote new and young talent in the country, the 55th edition of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) brings to you a new award category: ‘Best Debut Director of Indian Feature Film’
which will showcase five remarkable debut films that highlight new perspectives, diverse narratives, and innovative cinematic styles from across India.

Indian Panorama Picks:

The Indian Panorama is one of the biggest draws of IFFI. No other festival in India provides as rich an assemblage of the best films made in the country. For anybody interested in the cinema of the world’s most prolific film-producing nation, IFFI is, therefore, the go-to event.

On the programming side, IFFI not only unveils the best films from around the multilingual country with the aim of providing a glimpse of the sheer range and dynamism of Indian cinema, it also puts together a remarkable slate of brand new world cinema titles.

IFFI has announced selection of 25 Feature Films and 20 Non-Feature Films to be showcased in Indian Panorama Section. The package of 25 Feature Films including 5 films from mainstream cinema have been chosen from a broad spectrum of 384 contemporary Indian feature films. The Jury’s choice for the opening Film of Indian Panorama 2024 is “Swatantrya Veer Savarkar (Hindi)”, directed by Randeep Hooda.

Further, a package of 20 non-feature films will be screened in the Indian Panorama selected from a spectrum of 262 films. The package of Non-Feature Films exemplifies the capacity of emerging and established filmmakers to document, investigate, entertain and also reflect contemporary Indian values. The Jury’s choice for the opening film in the non feature category is ‘Ghar Jaisa Kuch (Ladakhi)’, directed by Harsh Sangani.

Country of Focus:

Australia has been nominated as the “Country of Focus” at the 55th edition of the IFFI. This special recognition aims to celebrate the dynamic contributions of Australian cinema to the global film industry, highlighting its rich storytelling traditions, vibrant film culture and innovative cinematic techniques. India & Australia are already parties to an Audio Visual Co-production Treaty.

The “Country of Focus” segment is a key feature of IFFI, offering a dedicated showcase of a nation’s best contemporary films. Australia’s diverse cultural background and globally acclaimed filmmakers have had a lasting impact on cinema, making it a fitting selection for this year. This inclusion reflects the strengthening collaboration between the Indian and Australian film industries.

Showcase of Australian Films

IFFI will present a carefully curated selection of seven Australian films, offering a diverse blend of genres, from critically acclaimed dramas to powerful documentaries, visually stunning thrillers, and light-hearted comedies. These films will showcase the unique cultural identity of Australia, reflecting the vibrant spectrum of stories from its indigenous and contemporary communities

Participation in Film Bazaar

Film Bazaar, the largest South Asian film market held alongside the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), will see a sizeable Australian participation with a strong delegation from Screen Australia, State Screen Commissions and also Ausfilm, the agency promoting Australia as a filming destination. They will showcase their offerings including Australian locations and incentives at the special Film Office exhibition area. The Film Bazaar will also see a Producers’ delegation with upto six producers receiving funding from the Australian Government to attend Film Bazaar and explore co-production opportunities. There will also be a special Australian Co-production Day at the Film Bazaar where filmmaker delegates from both the countries will be given an opportunity to network. Film Bazaar has also selected the Australian project Home Before Night as one of its official entries in the Co-Production Market.

Master Class by Cinematographer John Seale

A major attraction will be a Cinematography Master Class led by Academy Awardwinning cinematographer John Seale, known for his work on iconic films such as Mad Max: Fury Road and The English Patient. This session will delve into his artistic journey and offer invaluable technical insights to budding filmmakers and enthusiasts

Special Tributes:

The festival will shine a spotlight on select countries, offering a deep dive into their cinematic contributions. Special tributes and retrospectives will honour iconic filmmakers and actors, reflecting on their lasting impact on the industry. International and Indian Films: With a curated selection of international and Indian films, IFFI’s program will include diverse genres and styles, from thought provoking documentaries to ground breaking narratives

Workshops and Masterclasses:

Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in workshops and masterclasses led by industry experts. These interactive sessions will cover various aspects of filmmaking, offering invaluable insights and practical knowledge.

Creative Minds of Tomorrow (CMOT)

The CMOT initiative, launched to celebrate Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, continues to thrive. This year, CMOT will spotlight 100 young talents across 13 film crafts, offering them a platform to showcase their creativity and gain recognition. The program aims to identify and nurture emerging cinematic voices, contributing to India’s growing stature as a global content hub.

GOA: IFFI’S PERFECT LOCATION

Goa, a vibrant coastal state, continues to prove its suitability for the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI). Goa, known for its rich culture and beautiful scenery, enhances the festival experience by combining cinema with one of India’s most alluring destinations.
