The 76th Berlinale International Film Festival kicked off February 2026 with a glittering opening ceremony that brought Hollywood glamour and European cinema royalty to a rain-soaked Berlin.
Academy Award winner Michelle Yeoh received an honorary Golden Bear for lifetime achievement from filmmaker Sean Baker, whose previous work Anora won the Palme d’Or at Cannes. The moment drew thunderous applause as Yeoh, visibly moved, accepted the festival’s highest honour, celebrating her decades-long career spanning Asian and Western cinema.
Opening Night Under Gray Skies
Despite persistent wet weather that blanketed the German capital, the festival atmosphere remained electric. European and American stars braved the elements on the red carpet outside the Berlinale Palast, with umbrellas dotting the scene as photographers jostled for position. The inclement weather did little to dampen spirits as celebrities, filmmakers, and industry professionals gathered for one of cinema’s most prestigious events.
‘No Good Men’ Launches Competition
The festival opened with No Good Men, which premiered as the opening film, setting the tone for 11 days of international cinema. The selection signals Berlinale’s continued commitment to bold, challenging narratives that push artistic boundaries.
A Festival Atmosphere Returns
The opening night buzz extended beyond the main venue, with festival-goers filling Berlin’s cinemas, bars, and cultural spaces. The unmistakable Berlinale atmosphere—a unique blend of serious cinephilia, industry networking, and celebratory spirit—once again transformed the city into a global cinema hub.
With 18 films competing for the Golden Bear and hundreds more screening across various sections, Berlinale 2026 promises to deliver its signature mix of artistic discovery and industry dealmaking through February 23, rain or snow.
