The European Film Market (EFM), taking place February 12-18, 2026 as part of the 76th Berlinale, is launching its largest edition yet with expanded programming, new strategic partnerships, and initiatives designed to address evolving needs in the global audiovisual industry.
As the first major film market of the year, EFM’s new initiatives set trends for the year, cementing its role as the industry’s incubator for emerging business models, buying-selling and talent pipelines.
The market introduces three major new components: EFM Animation Days, a dedicated innovation platform called EFM Beyond, and the Berlinale Film School Summit. These additions reflect the market’s commitment to emerging sectors and early-stage talent development while maintaining its position as the year’s first major industry gathering, drawing tens of thousands of professionals from over 130 countries.
Animation Days Take Center Stage
The inaugural EFM Animation Days (February 12–14) marks the market’s most significant expansion. The three-day program brings together animation studios, producers, buyers, financiers, and cross-IP partners for curated showcases, pitches, case studies, workshops, and networking. A centerpiece is the Annecy Animation Showcase EFM, curated by MIFA and the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, featuring animated works in progress set for release in the second half of 2026, targeting buyers and festival programmers.
Festival Director Tricia Tuttle emphasized the market’s significance: “The work at European Film Market supports film businesses ensuring cultural cinema reaches audiences worldwide. It’s vital to see EFM’s energy on the future—from digital innovation to creating pathways for new talent. This is why it remains a must-attend market.”
“The EFM Animation Days is a vital new initiative that champions a very creative and dynamic sector, in which Europe provides a world-class pipeline,” said Berlinale Pro Director Tanja Meissner. “Showcasing the extraordinary talent and creativity that drive the European animation industry is both an industrial and a cultural imperative.”
EFM Beyond: Cross-Sector Innovation Platform
EFM Beyond, housed in the Gropius Bau, merges film, animation, gaming, and emerging sectors like story-based XR. The program targets producers with practice-oriented workshops on expanding IP across multiple media, worldbuilding sessions, and a Cross-IP accelerator co-organized with SpielFabrique and the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. The EFM Innovation Hub showcases cutting-edge production technologies, while daily networking sessions connect professionals across sectors.
New Talent and Early-Stage Projects
The Berlinale Film School Summit (February 17) is new in 2026, welcoming 100 selected directing and producing students from leading global film schools. Participants gain exclusive access to Berlinale Pro, tailored workshops, masterclasses, and structured networking.
Works-in-progress initiatives include the EFM Far East in Progress WIP selection, a partnership with EAVE Ties that Bind and Focus Asia presenting newly completed Asian films headed to fall markets. The EFM Frontières Focus highlights five bold, innovative international genre projects in advanced production stages.
Series, Documentary, and Country Focus
The Berlinale Series Market returns with expanded initiatives, including Series Match, connecting Ibero-American and German producers on early-stage series projects, and Series Talks at the CinemaxX lounge. The DocSalon offers networking for nonfiction professionals, while the Archive Market (February 17) focuses on restored classics, heritage re-releases, and restoration, with a new emphasis on animated documentaries.
Morocco serves as the 2026 Country in Focus, showcasing the MENA region’s production landscape through pitching sessions, showcases, and networking events.
Investor Forum and Startup Programme
The EFM Investors Forum brings together leading film and media finance figures for high-level exchanges amid coproduction, distribution, and innovation discussions. The EFM Startups Programme, now in its twelfth edition, introduces ten international media-tech entrepreneurs whose solutions span production, distribution, rights management, exhibition, and audience engagement. Alumni include FilmChain, Respeecher, and Largo.ai.
Conference and Industry Support
The EFM conference programme (February 13–16) features talks, masterclasses, and panels exploring emerging trends: innovative business models, audience engagement, and market consolidation.
The 2026 edition receives support from Creative Europe MEDIA, regional funding bodies, and industry partners, positioning EFM as the global audiovisual sector’s primary starting point.
