Christopher Nolan’s IMAX-shot Homeric epic delivers Universal its biggest R-rated opening ever, Matt Damon’s career-best debut, and the filmmaker’s largest worldwide launch — with India, France and Italy anchoring an unusually front-loaded international run.

Christopher Nolan’s long-gestating adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey has landed on the global box-office shore with the biggest opening weekend of the director’s career, grossing an estimated $264.1 million worldwide in its debut frame through Sunday, July 19.

The $250-million-budgeted epic, starring Matt Damon as Odysseus alongside Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway and Zendaya, opened to $124.5 million domestically from 3,919 North American theatres and $139.6 million internationally across 73 markets, 12,700 locations and 25,600 screens — the largest foreign debut of Nolan’s career. The worldwide total surpasses the previous Nolan high-water mark of $249 million set unadjusted by The Dark Knight Rises in 2012, and comfortably eclipses Oppenheimer’s $180 million global BO.

Universal had modelled a domestic opening in the $80–$100 million range as recently as last week; the studio’s $117-million upgraded internal projection was itself outstripped by more than $7 million. The film’s $51.2-million opening day — including $17.6 million in Thursday previews — is the highest single-day preview haul of 2026, edging Toy Story 5.

IMAX and premium formats do the heavy lifting: Billed as the first feature shot entirely with IMAX cameras, The Odyssey leaned hard on large-format screens, which accounted for roughly 53% of opening-weekend ticket sales, per Universal. IMAX Corporation itself notched its biggest global opening weekend on record — $51.8 million worldwide, comprising $29.6 million domestic and $22 million international — surpassing Avengers: Endgame in comparable markets. London’s BFI IMAX, which sold 28,000 tickets for £750,000 in the first 24 hours of pre-sales a year ago, ran round-the-clock screenings through the opening weekend.

International rollout: France, Italy, India lead. The UK & Ireland topped overseas markets with $17.4 million, followed by France ($13.7 million) and Italy ($11 million). The Odyssey became Nolan’s biggest-ever opening in 48 territories — including France, Italy, India, Spain, Brazil, the Netherlands and Poland — and Universal’s largest debut in 11 markets.

In India, the film opened to ₹17.40 crore nett on day one across 8,413 shows with 48.7% occupancy, powered by English-language IMAX bookings. Three-day nett stood at an estimated ₹61.30 crore and gross at ₹73.19 crore — the biggest Hollywood opening of 2026 in the market and Nolan’s largest India debut.
