Synopsis
Sidhu’ is unknowingly kept under his mother’s tight control to prevent him from falling into bad company like his father. As result, his social development differs from that of other children. If a person doesn’t get the right answers at a formative age and goes astray, who is responsible for this? Overwhelmed, his mother Rajni takes Sidhu and his sister Nandu back to her childhood home after many years. For the first time, Sidhu breathes freely, liberated from the constraints that have confined him. His cousin Pappu becomes a close friend, revealing a beautiful world through his eyes. And right then, he gets an unexpected shock. Carrying the weight of unresolved questions, Sidhu enters adulthood and becomes attracted to a girl, triggering the resurfacing of his past. A mysterious journey begins, marked by mental unrest and symbolic dreams. A quest for self-discovery and one’s own sexuality.

Director(s) Statement
UMAL is based on a true story, compelling viewers to question: Am I male, female, or something else? Where this journey ends is for the audience to decide. Mental instability often plays a role. Some paths are dictated by nature, others are shaped by our choices. Masculinity and femininity are distinct aspects coexisted within every individual. I believe that this connection extends beyond just sexual organs or gender. It also has an spiritual component. The body, mind, and soul. The soul is genderless. The pursuit of the soul, its awakening experience and study is spirituality. The one who asks questions will also find answers; that’s the truth.
