Exploring the evolution of Naga beats and the power of music to heal, Rahman’s documentary and vision for India’s musical theatre strike a symphonic chord.
An invitation from Nagaland to attend the Annual Hornbill Competition has led music maestro A.R. Rahman to explore the realm of documentary production.
The outcome? A documentary entitled “Headhunting to Beatboxing” explores the musical evolution of the Naga tribe in Nagaland, a state located in the north-east region of India. The documentary examines the transformative impact of music in Nagaland, a region previously marred by violence and turmoil.
It highlights how the healing power of music has facilitated a remarkable resurgence, leading to a vibrant musical renaissance. The film made its debut at the 55th Indian Film Festival of India (IFFI) held in Goa.
Naga people have a profound appreciation for music. A.R. Rahman remarked during an in-conversation session at Kala Academy in Goa today, held on the sidelines of IFFI 2024, that the region boasts a Minister of Music and Arts. The event featured a segment dedicated to the Lata Mangeshkar Memorial Talk, focussing on the theme of “Musical Theatre in India.”
The Western world draws a significant influx of tourists with its vibrant musical theatre scene. The community possesses the necessary artistic capabilities to bring such a project to fruition. “However, there is a pressing need to develop infrastructure and enhance its appeal to attract both tourists and foreign investment,” stated Rahman.
As urbanisation continues to increase and living spaces become more confined, many residents report that their homes resemble prisons. There is a growing need to provide individuals with immersive art experiences that can act as beneficial distractions.

The rich musical theatre legacy found in various regions of the country serves as a significant unifying factor. There is a pressing need to revitalise our musical theatres by integrating music and technology, making them more appealing to foreign tourists. This initiative aims to draw visitors who typically travel to western countries for their musical theatre experiences, he stated.
In a recent statement regarding his inspirations, Rahman remarked, “Lata ji is an embodiment of perfection.” She, alongside artists such as Michael Jackson, serves as a significant source of inspiration for me.
A. R. Rahman expressed his fondness for his recent performance in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), highlighting his efforts to bring Indian music to the local audience.
In response to enquiries from participants regarding the fundamental principles of music composition, Rahman emphasised the importance of originality. He emphasised that original ideas possess longevity.
In a recent discussion regarding the influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the music industry, Rahman emphasised the importance of utilising AI to enhance human creativity, advocating for the creation of improved and more meaningful dubs. “However, caution is advised to ensure that it does not take away employment opportunities from individuals,” he warned.
The renowned music maestro presented a unique perspective on cloud-based music. He stated that it would be prudent to maintain analogue copies in case the cloud-based music were to vanish entirely. “Owning a physical copy of an artist’s music record demonstrates our respect for their work,” Rahman stated in conclusion.
