From accessible screenings to women-led stories, IFFI sets a new standard for diversity and inclusion in the world of film festivals.

The 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) has taken significant steps to enhance accessibility and inclusivity for all attendees. Prithul Kumar, Joint Secretary of Broadcasting from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting conveyed a strong sense of assurance regarding the festival’s efforts to promote inclusivity.

“We have embedded accessibility at the core, from trained volunteers and sensitised officers to a dedicated section of six films for persons with disabilities and 11 other accessible films,” he stated.

Prithul Kumar emphasised the Ministry’s dedication to fostering inclusivity, referencing the accessible guidelines that have been issued for the entertainment industry aimed at enhancing the inclusiveness of cinema. The efforts of the Goa Government and the Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG) were praised for their commitment to hosting the event with a strong emphasis on inclusivity.

Other key figures such as Taha I. Haaziq, Secretary of the State Commission for Persons with Disabilities in Goa, along with Vandana Boolchand, Head of Svayam, highlighted the initiatives implemented to establish the festival as a benchmark for inclusivity.

The festival embraces the theme of inclusivity with a range of initiatives designed to enhance accessibility. These include sign language interpretation, accessible film screenings, barrier-free venues, and sensitivity-trained staff. Additionally, the festival introduces digital tools such as the Movie Buff app, all aimed at creating a welcoming cinematic experience for every attendee.

Haaziq highlighted the significant contributions of Goa in advancing accessibility initiatives. He noted that production houses and OTT platforms are increasingly advancing in the implementation of accessibility features. The festival also highlighted the presence of e-rickshaws and wheelchairs designed for individuals with special needs.

Boolchand underscored the significant contributions of Svayam in performing accessibility audits and providing training. Svayam undertook various initiatives aimed at enhancing inclusivity throughout the event, including training the Media Team at NFDC and providing training to volunteers and officials to ensure differently-abled individuals were treated with care and sensitivity.

IFFI 2024 is a significant milestone in the festival’s journey, presenting Accessible IFFI, an initiative that reflects its commitment to inclusivity and progress.

For the first time in IFFI’s history, the entire festival team has undergone training to understand the needs of individuals with disabilities. This training not only creates a human connection but also ensures every visitor feels valued. IFFI’s efforts aim to set a benchmark for other events, inspiring a wider movement for inclusivity across festivals and public gatherings in India.

Accessibility is only one part of IFFI’s broader commitment to inclusivity. This year’s festival celebrates the diversity of talent in the world of cinema, with 47 films directed by women and 66 works from young and debut filmmakers. The Women in Cinema section highlights the inspiring journeys of rising stars and their impactful work.

IFFI 2024 reflects the vision of the Hon’ble Prime Minister–“SabkaSaath, SabkaVikas”–recognizing inclusivity, accessibility, and progress as the three key pillars embodying the spirit of this endeavor. It is not just about films; it is about celebrating diversity, breaking barriers, and fostering connections.
