By challenging storytellers to blend memory and machine, the Cinema AI Hackathon has illuminated a new path for cinematic creativity—one where every innovation begins with a story.
The 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) witnessed a landmark moment for the world of cinema as the Cinema AI Hackathon 2025, held under the prestigious Waves Film Bazaar, brought together visionaries in technology and storytelling for an intense, innovative competition.
Designed to celebrate the powerful intersection of art, technology, and ethics, the hackathon has emerged as a global platform where the filmmakers of tomorrow are pushing the boundaries of what is possible with artificial intelligence.
A New Paradigm for Creative Storytelling
The Cinema AI Hackathon 2025 was more than just a competition; it was a celebration of responsible, transparent, and authentic creativity powered by AI. Aspiring and established filmmakers from across the globe were encouraged to harness cutting-edge tools for scriptwriting, video generation, editing, and production, all while upholding the values essential to cinematic expression.
The call for entries, open from November 1 to November 12, 2025, received an overwhelming response, with over 180 submissions pouring in from solo creators and teams (of up to five members) worldwide. After a rigorous evaluation process, just 14 teams were shortlisted, earning their place in the festival’s signature 48-hour challenge.
The 48-Hour Challenge: Memories Reimagined
The final stage of the hackathon presented a formidable creative test: participants had from 4:00 PM IST on November 20 to 4:00 PM IST on November 22, 2025, to craft a 60–120 second cinematic story inspired by the theme, “Memories Reimagined.”
The challenge was to reinterpret a deeply personal memory, blending realism with the limitless possibilities of AI, and deliver a narrative that resonated emotionally with audiences and jurors alike.
Celebrating Excellence: The Award Winners
The hackathon culminated in a spirited awards ceremony, honoring excellence across five creative and technical categories:
Best AI Film: My Red Crayon (Hindi), directed by Aayush Raj and Team Kalpnk, took home the top honor for its imaginative storytelling and masterful use of AI.
Most Innovative Use of AI: REMORY (English), directed by Keyur Kajavadara and Team Atomeist, was recognized for its pioneering approach and boundary-pushing narrative techniques.
Best Storytelling: Lost and Found (Hindi), directed by Samresh Shrivastav and created with Yagya Priya Gautam, won for its compelling and emotionally resonant narrative.
Best Visuals: BEING (English), directed by Sumesh Lal and produced by Team Indywood & Wonderwall Media Network, dazzled jurors with its striking visual craftsmanship.
Best Sound/Music Design: Monsoon Echo (English), directed by Rajesh Bhosle, stood out for its evocative soundscape and music design, enhancing the cinematic experience.
A Jury of Esteemed Industry Leaders
The excellence on display was matched by the stature of the jury, which included luminaries such as IFFI Festival Director and filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, producer-director Ramdas Naidu, director and animator Ashwin Kumar, film historian Asha Batra, and senior executives from LTIMindtree including Dr. Sujay Sen, Nayna Raut, Dibyendu Halder, and Neha Kathuria.
The panel lauded the participants for their originality, technical finesse, and emotional depth—qualities made all the more impressive given the demanding time constraints.
A Landmark Initiative for the Next Generation
By challenging filmmakers to create under pressure and innovate with AI, the Cinema AI Hackathon 2025 has set a new benchmark for global creativity. The event not only showcased the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in cinema but also opened new horizons for storytellers eager to experiment at the cutting edge of art and technology.
As the curtain falls on this year’s hackathon, the message is clear: when human imagination joins forces with artificial intelligence, the future of filmmaking becomes a canvas of limitless possibility.
