With this groundbreaking initiative, India signals to the world that the next wave of cinematic brilliance may well be powered by a partnership between filmmakers and artificial intelligence.

The International Film Festival of India (IFFI) and WAVES Film Bazaar, in partnership with LTIMindtree, have raised the curtain on a new era of cinematic innovation by launching India’s first-ever AI Film Festival and Cinema AI Hackathon. This trailblazing event, hosted during the 56th edition of IFFI in Goa, signals the country’s bold entry into the rapidly evolving world of artificial intelligence in cinema.

Pioneering the Intersection of Film and Technology

In a year where the fusion of technology and creativity is in sharp focus, the AI Film Festival stands out as a milestone, merging storytelling with next-generation AI tools. The festival drew a remarkable 68 film submissions from 18 countries, including acclaimed works from five international AI film festivals—Adobe Max, AI Film3 Festival (USA), Burano AI Film Festival (Italy), Metamorph AI Film Awards (UK), and Omni Film Festival (Australia). In addition, 14 independent filmmakers from across the globe contributed to this vibrant celebration of AI-driven storytelling.

After a rigorous selection process, 27 films were chosen to compete for top honors, with four more selected for a non-competition showcase. Curators focused on artistic merit, technical innovation, and narrative depth, reflecting the diverse and experimental spirit that AI brings to the cinematic arts.

Honoring Excellence in AI-Driven Filmmaking

The festival’s much-anticipated awards ceremony, held during the WAVES Film Bazaar’s closing gala, spotlighted trailblazers in AI filmmaking with three major awards and two special mentions:

  • The Craft Master Award for Best AI Short Film (₹3,00,000) went to NAGORI directed by Guillaume Hurbault (France), praised for its compelling storytelling, technical execution, and emotional impact.
  • The Craft Vanguard Award for Most Innovative Use of AI / Experimental Narrative (₹2,00,000) was awarded to The Cinema That Never Was by Mark Wachholz (Germany), lauded for its avant-garde narrative and ground-breaking AI techniques.
  • The Craft Spectra Award for Best AI Animation / Visual Design (₹1,00,000) was presented to Kyra by Meta Puppet (USA), recognized for extraordinary visual artistry and design enabled by AI.

Additionally, the Jury presented Special Mentions to two standout projects: The Last Backup Final Part by Sreerithanya M. (English) and Miracle on Kachua Beach by Shivanshu Nirupam (Hindi), both of which demonstrated exceptional creativity and promise in AI-enhanced filmmaking.

A Global Platform for AI Storytelling

The inaugural AI Film Festival not only celebrated technological achievement but also underscored the rise of a global community embracing AI’s creative possibilities. The festival’s reach extended far beyond India’s borders, highlighting the growing international appetite for storytelling powered by artificial intelligence.

Screenings of the winning and selected films are scheduled at two prominent Goan venues: on November 26th at Maquinez Palace (Audi 1, 2:30 PM), and on November 27th at INOX Porvorim (Audi 4, 4:45 PM), offering festival-goers a first-hand glimpse into the future of cinema.

India’s Next Chapter in Cinema

The success of the AI Film Festival at IFFI represents more than an embrace of new technology; it’s a testament to India’s role as a global innovation hub in both technology and the arts. As AI continues to reshape the possibilities for filmmakers worldwide, India’s creative industries are poised to lead this new cinematic frontier—where imagination meets algorithm, and artistry meets artificial intelligence.
