Acclaimed filmmaker Mani Ratnam delivered a compelling address at the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) Masterclass, focussing on the theme of “Transforming Literary Masterpieces into Engaging Films.”

He highlighted the profound relationship that exists between cinema and literature, claiming that a closer alignment between the two will enhance the quality of Indian cinema. Ratnam highlighted the significance of mastering the intricate skill of converting written language into captivating visual stories.

He said that films serve as a visual medium, whereas books predominantly engage the imagination. In the realm of filmmaking, it is essential for creators to tread carefully when translating a viewer’s imagination into a visual narrative.

While scripts may require modifications, such changes should serve to enrich the story without compromising its fundamental spirit. He discussed the impact of mythology and ancient Indian history on his perspective, which has allowed him to approach characters in distinctive manners.

Ratnam elaborated on his latest cinematic endeavour, ‘PonniyinSelvan’, an adaptation of the renowned 1955 novel by Kalki Krishnamurthy that shares its title. The filmmaker made the bold choice to shoot the movie in northern India, transforming the local architecture to evoke the grandeur of the Chola dynasty.

The filmmaker emphasised the importance of collaboration in the film industry, encouraging emerging filmmakers to approach creative liberties with care. He highlighted the need to maintain the essence of the original literary work while infusing it with their distinctive artistic interpretation in adaptations.

The Masterclass showcased the filmmaker’s exceptional skills and modesty, providing insightful lessons for aspiring storytellers on connecting the realms of literature and cinema.
