Manoj Bajpayee Unveils the Grit and Glory of Despatch at IFFI 2024

At the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), actor Manoj Bajpayee, a four-time National Award winner and Padma Shri honoree, attended a press conference where his film Despatch was showcased in the ‘Special Presentations’ category.

The film’s cast and crew, including Bajpayee, director Kannu Behl, Ishani Banerjee, and actress Shahana Goswami, engaged with the media to discuss the film’s development, the obstacles faced during production, and the compelling storyline that delves into the darker aspects of journalism.

Bajpayee expressed his heartfelt reflections on the journey of Despatch, highlighting the various challenges encountered throughout its production. Director KannuBehl received high praise for his innovative approach to filmmaking, being recognized as one of the most exciting talents in the industry today.

Filming began amidst the pandemic, presenting a significant challenge in itself. During the Delta wave, several members of the team contracted the virus during filming in Mumbai. However, they resumed filming after that, triumphing over significant challenges.

The script, crafted by Ishani and Kannu, possesses a remarkable authenticity and allure that draws the audience in. The narrative centers on a journalist whose ambition and professional drive significantly impact his personal life.

Bajpayee shared insights on the significance of the film’s script, emphasizing the rigorous workshops that played a crucial role in grasping the intricacies of the characters. The discussion centred around the profound impact that rigorous preparation for the role of a journalist had on his mental state, while simultaneously contributing to his development as an actor.

Despatch narrates the journey of Joy, a crime editor who faces a pivotal investigation that unveils profound corruption intertwined with gang conflicts. Amidst his professional struggles, Joy grapples with the disintegration of his marriage and the treachery of those he once trusted, culminating in devastating outcomes. The official release date for the film is set for December 13, 2024.

Alongside the press conference, Manoj Bajpayee participated in an engaging In-Conversation session during the IFFI event. He expressed his deep passion for his craft, stating that acting is an ongoing journey that perpetually captivates and motivates him.

He elaborated on the differences between theatre and film, stating that theatre serves as an actor’s domain, while film is inherently the realm of the director.

Bajpayee expressed his concern regarding the current state of both society and the film industry, noting that it is a challenging period marked by uncertainty, conflict, and confusion in both realms. He emphasized the importance of mentoring Independent Cinema for fostering the growth of Indian Cinema.

The captivating session was led by esteemed film critic, Sudhir Srinivasan, who highlighted Bajpayee’s dedication to his profession and his conviction in the ability of storytelling to mirror and influence society.
