From patriarchy’s grip in Rajasthan to chilling folklore in Kerala, ‘Roti Koon Banasi?’ and ‘Bramayugam’ steal the spotlight with their powerful narratives.
The 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) has been a platform for showcasing diverse stories rooted in regional culture and mythology. Two standout films, ‘Roti Koon Banasi?’ and ‘Bramayugam’, have captivated audiences with their distinct narratives exploring the intersections of tradition, identity, and societal expectations.
‘Roti Koon Banasi?’ explores the profound effects of patriarchy across generations. The drama, presented in the Rajasthani language, evokes deep emotions and resonates with its audience. The narrative unfolds around a young man who finds himself in a struggle between adhering to his father’s conventional expectations and his commitment to supporting his wife. In this intricate depiction, Singh illuminates the ways in which patriarchal beliefs influence family dynamics, especially highlighting the disproportionate responsibilities shouldered by women.
‘Bramayugam’ is a Malayalam folk horror directed by Rahul Sadasivan, blending folk horror and mythology in a chilling tale of survival, betrayal, and supernatural forces. The film follows Thevan, a man fleeing Portuguese slave traders, who becomes entangled in the sinister secrets of an abandoned manor. At its heart lies the haunting figure of the Chathan, a demon gifted to the house’s ancestors by the goddess Varahi. Over generations, the demon has wreaked havoc, culminating in a power struggle that consumes everyone involved.
Both films highlight the transformative power of regional cinema, drawing attention to the pressing issue of gender equality within patriarchal structures. Chandan Singh, Director of ‘Roti Koon Banasi?’, emphasizes the importance of platforms like IFFI in amplifying regional voices and bringing attention to stories from regions that might not otherwise be heard.
Bramayugam demonstrates the universal appeal of folklore, proving that regional stories can captivate global audiences. Both films share a commitment to sparking meaningful conversations and exemplify the evolving landscape of Indian cinema, where regional stories are gaining recognition for their depth, artistry, and cultural significance.
