The debut production from Manish Malhotra transcends conventional suspense, weaving a story of betrayal, vengeance, and layered characters.
In a captivating narrative of treachery, vengeance, and indistinct realities, the film ‘Saali Mohabbat’ intricately intertwines the past with the present, delivering a suspenseful experience that goes beyond mere plot twists to delve into profound emotions and a richly developed character-driven storyline.
During a press conference at the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in the vibrant state of Goa, the team behind ‘Saali Mohabbat’ engaged with the media, discussing their experiences and aspirations related to the film’s creation.
Manish Malhotra, a celebrated fashion designer, has ventured into the realm of production for the first time. He shared insights on how his extensive experience in the fashion industry has shaped his approach to filmmaking, especially in terms of visual storytelling and meticulous attention to detail.
The significance of a grounded and authentic narrative was underscored, highlighting the necessity of character depth over mere spectacle. Malhotra conveyed enthusiasm for delving into the whodunit genre, with the intention of crafting a narrative that emotionally resonated and established a connection with the audience, moving away from conventional plot twists.
Co-producer Jyoti Deshpande emphasised the importance of careful storytelling, noting that there has been a lack of major successful films in the whodunit genre in recent years. She conveyed a sense of pride in debuting the film in India, highlighting the uncommon occurrence of world premieres taking place in a film’s country of origin.
Deshpande expressed enthusiasm for the film’s character-driven approach, highlighting its potential to distinguish itself through emotional engagement rather than depending on shock value.
Director Tisca Chopra shared her insights regarding the film, emphasising the importance of subtlety and emotional depth over conventional genre elements. She highlighted the importance of teamwork, noting that every element—from the script to the performances—played a crucial role in shaping the film’s overall effect.
Actor Dibyendu emphasised how the film distinguishes itself from conventional whodunits by prioritising the intricacies of character development over external suspense elements. The construction of psychological tension was articulated through the intricate relationships and motivations of the characters. This approach ensured that the audience’s engagement was deeply anchored in the story’s richness and its emotional essence.
The team wrapped up by highlighting their ambition to craft a film that resonates on an emotional level and stimulates thoughtful reflection, aiming for the audience to depart with a richer comprehension of the characters and their underlying motivations.
