Artificial Intelligence is increasingly being used across the Indian film industry for scriptwriting, including generating dialogues, storylines and screenplays, but the government has clarified that it is not currently planning any new regulation specific to such tools.
Government tracks rise of AI tools
The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting has acknowledged the growing deployment of AI-powered tools in film and media writing workflows, especially in the development of scripts, plots and character dialogues. This trend reflects the broader integration of AI into creative and production processes in India’s screen industries.
No move to amend Cinematograph Act
The government has stated that there is, at present, no proposal under consideration to regulate the use of AI in filmmaking and scriptwriting through an amendment to the Cinematograph Act, 1952. This means existing certification and content oversight mechanisms remain the primary instruments for addressing any concerns related to film content, irrespective of whether AI is used in its creation.
Minister’s statement in Rajya Sabha
Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs Dr. L. Murugan shared this position in the Rajya Sabha while responding to a question raised by S. Niranjan Reddy. His reply indicates that while the government is closely watching technological shifts in the industry, it is not seeking AI-specific curbs in film writing at this stage.
