At 18, Film Bazaar turns a serious business hub
From fostering ground-breaking collaborations to spotlighting India’s cinematic evolution, Film Bazaar at 18 cements its place as a global marketplace for filmmakers from around the world, says Jerome Paillard, the advisor to Film Bazaar and former Marche veteran and executive director of the Cannes Film Market.
As Film Bazaar celebrates its 18th edition, the event takes a decisive leap forward, establishing itself as a key business destination for filmmakers in India and beyond. With a renewed focus on quality and innovation, the 2024 edition reflects Film Bazaar’s growing stature on the global cinema landscape.
Jerome Paillard, the advisor to Film Bazaar and former executive director of the Cannes Film Market, shared his insights into this year’s milestones. He emphasized that Film Bazaar has emerged as a unique platform for fostering collaborations and showcasing the dynamism of Indian independent cinema.
A Turning Point: Co-Production Market
This year, the Co-Production Market proved to be a highlight, distinguishing itself from similar global initiatives. “It’s very unique compared to anything else in the world,” said Jerome Paillard. The 21 selected projects, curated through a rigorous selection process by an expert committee of Indian and international professionals, showcased innovative storytelling and diverse narratives.
“I’m very optimistic about the Co-Production Market,” he remarked. “We invited many new producers this year who had never attended Film Bazaar, which is a crucial step toward expanding its global outreach.”
The addition of the $20,000 award for co-productions marks another milestone, incentivizing filmmakers to pursue ambitious collaborations.
The budget for the total 21 films in the Film Bazaar co-production market is around $14 mn and only around $4 mn finance is in place. The co-production project pitching will happen on Thursday at the Film Bazaar.
Elevating Indian Cinema’s Global Presence
Jerome Paillard highlighted that 2024 has been a standout year for Indian cinema, with multiple films making waves at international festivals. “There’s a lot of attention on India right now,” he said. “It’s the perfect moment to strengthen Film Bazaar as a hub for connecting global producers with the new wave of Indian cinema.”
The quality of attendees this year at both Film Bazaar and the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) has set a new benchmark. “We need to ensure that these guests get a true sense of the evolving Indian cinema landscape,” Jerome Paillard added.
Work-in-Progress Lab and Viewer’s Room
The Work-in-Progress Lab—a signature feature of Film Bazaar—continued to impress. “This year’s selection is very strong, and I’m eager to see the industry’s reaction to these projects,” Jerome Paillard noted.
Additionally, the Viewer’s Room, offering access to unreleased films and curated content, garnered positive feedback. It remains a vital tool for buyers, distributors, and festival curators seeking fresh talent and stories.
The Challenges and the Road Ahead
While the successes are noteworthy, Jerome Paillard acknowledged areas for improvement. “India is seen as an exciting but challenging market,” he explained. To enhance the event’s impact, he suggested earlier planning and additional resources. “Starting earlier with the selection process and early invitations could bring even more value next year,” he said.
A Catalyst for Growth
As Film Bazaar matures, its role as a catalyst for collaboration and innovation in Indian cinema becomes more pronounced. From creating new opportunities for Indian storytellers to attracting international producers, Film Bazaar is not just a marketplace but a bridge connecting cultures, stories, and business prospects.
With optimism and a commitment to excellence, Film Bazaar is poised to continue its transformation into a premier global destination for filmmakers.
