The founder and CEO of Green Gold Animation is acknowledged as India’s most successful original IP creator—a visionary who defied the odds, built a billion-rupee empire, and gave Indian children their very own homegrown superhero: Chhota Bheem and Mighty Little Bheem
In the world of animation, where characters are born from imagination and built into empires, Rajiv Chilaka stands as a quiet revolutionary. Over the past 25 years, Rajiv Chilaka has emerged as India’s most successful IP creator—a visionary who not only built the country’s biggest homegrown animation studio, Green Gold Animation, but also transformed Indian animation into a global export. His creation Chhota Bheem is not just a beloved children’s character; it is arguably India’s most valuable animation IP of the millennium.
Green Gold at WAVES
Green Gold Animation, the powerhouse behind India’s most iconic toons, sets up camp in the Telangana Pavilion at WAVES 2025, Mumbai. Rajiv Chilaka will also be seen in action on a panel about global storytelling alongside industry stalwarts. All eyes on the man who built an empire from Bheem’s brave little fists. He is also Co-Founder, TVAGA & IndiaJoy, and President, TVAGA.
When Chilaka founded Green Gold in 2001, India’s animation industry was still in its infancy. Outsourcing dominated, original content was rare, and global recognition was distant. Rajiv Chilaka, inspired by Walt Disney, dared to dream differently. His ambition wasn’t just to animate—it was to create characters rooted in Indian culture with universal appeal. Chhota Bheem, launched in 2008, was the first proof of that dream.
What began as a simple tale of a brave and kind-hearted boy from Dholakpur grew into a multimedia powerhouse. Today, Chhota Bheem boasts over 500 episodes, 52 TV movies, 37 mini-movies, and a business footprint estimated at $100 million. But its value goes beyond numbers. Rajiv Chilaka’s storytelling has left a deep cultural imprint—comparable in longevity and affection to characters like Spider-Man or Superman within the Indian context.

PM gives Bheem a Mic Drop Moment
When the PM name-drops your creation on national radio, you’ve made it. In Mann Ki Baat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed Chhota Bheem as a shining symbol of India’s animation prowess, saying:“Children can never forget Chhota Bheem! Today, ‘Dholakpurka Dhol’ thrills not just Indian kids but kids across the world.”
For Rajiv Chilaka, it was more than recognition — it was a national endorsement of homegrown IP dreams.
Rajiv Chilaka’s foresight extended beyond Indian borders. In 2019, he launched Mighty Little Bheem (MLB), a non-verbal spinoff on Netflix. It quickly became one of the most-watched preschool shows globally, streamed in 190 countries (No language in MLB). By eliminating dialogue, Mighty Little Bheem broke language barriers while preserving Indian essence—celebrating maternal love, playfulness, and simple joys. Its billion-plus views on YouTube underscore its unmatched reach.
The World Loves Bheem — Here’s the Proof
Streaming across 190 countries and counting.
Netflix’s Mighty Little Bheem became the second most-watched preschool show in the USA. Brazil, Mexico, UK — he’s everywhere.Bheem doesn’t speak a word, but needs no translation. That’s the power of a story that punches through borders, one strong little kid at a time.
Despite his success, Rajiv Chilaka’s journey has been anything but smooth. A fire razed his studio in 2008. Low production budgets and market hesitancy almost forced him to sell the rights to ChhotaBheem early on. But he held firm. “To own is to endure,” he says, reflecting his unwavering belief in the power of intellectual property. It’s a belief that has helped Green Gold retain ownership while collaborating with global giants like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney, Warner Bros., and Nickelodeon.

From merchandise deals with McDonald’s, ITC, Parle-G, and Cadbury to launching Chhota Startup—a kids’ show on Disney promoting entrepreneurship—Green Gold’s 360-degree IP strategy is a masterclass in brand building. The company has licensed everything from backpacks to toys, books to mobile apps. It now boasts over 900 employees across Hyderabad, Chennai, and Kolkata, and plans to expand into Hyderabad’s upcoming Image Tower.
Internationally, Rajiv Chilaka has entered new frontiers. Co-productions with Japan’s TV ASAHI, Sony India, and collaborations with TV ASAHI point to India’s growing voice in global animation. Green Gold is not just a content company—it’s a movement that proves Indian stories, when told with sincerity and skill, can win hearts worldwide.
A strong believer in evolving with technology, Rajiv Chilaka sees AI as an ally, not a threat. “AI can enhance productivity, but creativity needs a human soul,” he says. The studio is actively developing live-action, VFX, and web series content—demonstrating an adaptability that keeps it ahead of the curve.
Rajiv Chilaka’s impact isn’t confined to screens. He has seeded an entire ecosystem of Indian animation IPs, inspiring studios to create, not just outsource. With Netflix, he has shown how India’s cultural heritage can anchor globally successful stories. With Chhota Bheem, he has taught a generation the values of courage, compassion, and fun.
As Green Gold marks its 20th anniversary, Chilaka isn’t celebrating a legacy—he’s building its next chapter. New seasons, new languages, new heroes, and new platforms are in the pipeline. And behind it all, still humble and grounded, is the man who reminds young creators: “Success doesn’t come overnight. You need to play the long game.”

Spark from the Mouse
While studying computer science in Missouri, Rajiv Chilaka stumbled upon Walt Disney’s story — and that changed everything. He left a cushy US job, returned to Hyderabad, and launched Green Gold in a small home office. Today, he’s India’s undisputed IP king. Talk about full-circle storytelling.
In a global media landscape dominated by Western franchises, Rajiv Chilaka today is India’s answer to Walt Disney—a relentless dreamer who proved that homegrown heroes could rise, not just in India, but across the world.
‘We’re Not Just for Kids Anymore’
“We realized we can’t be just a kids’ animation company. The global stage is calling — visual effects, live-action, web series — we’re all in. India’s stories are ready for the world. It’s time we stop playing small,” says Rajiv Chilaka.
