This year’s Industry Conference, scheduled from September 6 to 10, promises to be a vibrant meeting ground for global professionals, offering inspiration, opportunities, and vital connections
The TIFF Industry Conference is one of the most awaited events, gathering thousands of international and Canadian industry professionals in Toronto. This five-day event is more than a networking hub; it’s a platform for global business development, content deals, and crucial dialogues that shape the future of screen-based projects. With the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) set to launch its official content market in 2026, TIFF Industry is gearing up for an impactful season in 2024.
This year, TIFF has over 140 sales titles in its Official Selection, making it the ideal destination for buying and selling content. The Conference will feature a wide array of programming that includes keynote speeches, panel discussions, and networking opportunities.
The Six Pillars of TIFF Industry Conference
This year’s Industry Conference is structured around six key pillars: Visionaries, Dialogues, Perspectives, Microsessions, Spotlights, and Meet the Decision Makers. Each pillar brings together diverse voices, experiences, and insights that reflect the evolving landscape of the film industry.
Visionaries
Supported by The Hollywood Reporter, this series presents onstage conversations with industry leaders and creatives who are redefining the boundaries of cinema. Notable speakers this year include celebrated filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón, Pixar’s Pete Docter, Franklin Leonard of The Black List, Steven Moffat, and activist Malala Yousafzai. Their insights promise to inspire both seasoned professionals and newcomers.
Dialogues
These moderated discussions bring together directors, screenwriters, and producers to delve into the nuances of their creative processes. Highlights include conversations with Janicza Bravo and Jordan Tannahill on adaptations, and Malcolm Washington and Virgil Williams on their work on “The Piano Lesson.” The Dialogues series provides a unique glimpse into the minds of filmmakers as they navigate the complexities of storytelling.
Perspectives
Supported by Screen International, this segment offers panel discussions on the state of the industry. Key topics include the future of film journalism, sustainable cinema, and accessibility in filmmaking. Panels like “The State of Theatrical Distribution in a Global Marketplace” and “Strategies for Sustainable Cinema” will explore the challenges and opportunities facing today’s filmmakers.
Microsessions
These sessions, programmed in collaboration with industry partners, provide deep dives into specific topics with expert speakers. Notable sessions include “TikTok: Redefining Fandom,” “The Future of Media & Entertainment: AI-Powered Business Models,” and “How Theatres Are ‘Event-izing’ the Moviegoing Experience.” These sessions highlight how technology and innovation are transforming the industry.
Spotlights
These breakfast market events offer pitching, networking, and project financing opportunities with national and regional promotion agencies. Events like “The BIG PITCH at TIFF,” “Italy, Your Strategic Film Partner!” and “Colombia: Savor the Full Potential for New Projects” provide filmmakers with direct access to potential collaborators and investors.

Meet the Decision Makers
This pillar offers intimate sessions connecting emerging filmmakers with key industry players, including distributors, sales agents, financiers, streamers, and broadcasters. It’s an invaluable opportunity for new talents to gain insights and build relationships that could propel their careers.
Celebrating Visionaries and Creators
The Visionaries series is particularly anticipated, featuring onstage conversations with some of the most influential figures in film today. Alfonso Cuarón, known for his award-winning films like “Gravity” and “Roma,” will share his experiences in creating ground-breaking cinema that defies genre constraints. Pete Docter, the creative mind behind Pixar’s most beloved animations, will discuss his journey from early flipbooks to directing Oscar-winning films like “Up” and “Inside Out.” These dialogues aim to inspire the next generation of filmmakers by showcasing the diverse pathways to success in the industry.
Exploring Current Trends and Future Directions
The TIFF Industry Conference doesn’t shy away from addressing pressing issues within the film industry. Panels like “The Future of Film Journalism” and “The State of Theatrical Distribution in a Global Marketplace” will explore the shifting landscape of media and entertainment. Another highlight, “Strategies for Sustainable Cinema,” will address the industry’s responsibility to adopt greener practices, supported by Ontario Creates. Additionally, discussions on accessibility, such as “Building Inclusive Futures,” will ensure that the conference remains relevant to the broader conversation about diversity and inclusion.
Live Onstage Podcasts and Talent Studio Initiatives
TIFF’s media partners will host live onstage podcasts with some of the festival’s most exciting directors and actors. IndieWire’s “Screen Talk Live” and The Ankler’s “Prestige Junkie LIVE” will offer fans a behind-the-scenes look at the creative process. Furthermore, the TIFF Talent Studio will continue to support emerging talents through various labs, fellowships, and funds designed to nurture the next generation of directors, producers, and writers.
United to Drive AI Talent in Film
Women In Cloud (WIC) and TIFF Industry have announced a first-of-its-kind collaboration to unite technology and film for talent development within the AI economy. This ground-breaking partnership will debut at TIFF 2024 with key initiatives, including AI Talent Development Scholarships, an AI for Moviemakers accelerator, an industry panel, and the screening of WIC’s debut documentary, ICONS.
The AI Talent Development Scholarships will grant 1,000 Microsoft AI credential scholarships, valued at $4.5 million, to participants through the TIFF Industry ecosystem.
The industry panel titled “The Future of Media & Entertainment: AI-Powered Business Models and Gender-Inclusive Investments” will delve into how AI can revolutionize business models, enhance revenue streams, and foster gender representation in media.
Highlighting the collaboration’s spirit, ICONS, Women In Cloud’s debut documentary, will screen on September 6th, showcasing stories of women in tech and underscoring the power of media partnerships to drive economic inclusion and policy change.
The partnership aims to empower creatives with AI skills, bridge economic divides, and promote gender representation in media. Chaitra Vedullapalli, President of Women In Cloud, stated, “Together with TIFF, we’re nurturing talent and driving an inclusive, technology-driven entertainment sector.”

New Initiatives at TIFF 2024
Industry Accelerator Program
This year, TIFF introduces the Industry Accelerator Program, a dynamic initiative designed to empower emerging filmmakers and producers with direct access to top industry professionals. Global Pitch Platform
Another standout initiative is the Global Pitch Platform, a first-of-its-kind opportunity at TIFF that invites filmmakers from around the world to pitch their projects directly to leading studios, distributors, and financiers. This initiative focuses on fostering international collaborations and helping filmmakers secure funding and distribution deals, bridging gaps between diverse cinematic markets.

As TIFF approaches its 50th edition next year, the festival continues to expand its role as a key voice in global cinema. With the launch of its official content market in 2026 on the horizon, TIFF is well-positioned to become an even more significant hub for industry professionals. According to Anita Lee, TIFF’s Chief Programming Officer, “As we approach the 50th edition of the Festival next year and our very first official content market in 2026, we look forward to future collaborations with our Industry partners, creators, and visionaries, ensuring that TIFF continues to grow as a voice for new ideas, collaboration, and cultural exchange for all.”
