La Biennale di Venezia and Cartier have announced that the legendary French director, writer, and producer Claude Lelouch will be honored with the Cartier Glory to the Filmmaker Award at the 81st Venice International Film Festival. This prestigious accolade recognizes a filmmaker who has made a particularly original contribution to contemporary cinema.
The award ceremony will be held on September 2, 2024, in the Sala Grande at the Palazzo del Cinema, followed by the out-of-competition screening of Lelouch’s latest film, Finalement (France, 127’), featuring Kad Merad, Elsa Zylberstein, Michel Boujenah, Sandrine Bonnaire, Barbara Pravi, and Françoise Gillard.
Alberto Barbera, Director of the Venice Film Festival, praised Lelouch as one of the foremost directors in French cinema. Barbera highlighted Lelouch’s ability to blend genres and his talent for creating emotionally resonant films that have left an indelible mark on the cinematic landscape.
Cyrille Vigneron, President and CEO of Cartier, celebrated Lelouch’s extensive career and his exceptional storytelling, particularly his profound exploration of love and human emotions. Vigneron noted the enduring impact of Lelouch’s work, including the iconic soundtrack “Chabadabada” from “A Man and a Woman.”
Finalement: Lelouch’s new film, Finalement, tells the story of Lino, who, in an increasingly chaotic world, decides to abandon everything only to realize that everything happens for a reason. The film is produced by Les Films 13, co-produced by France 2 Cinéma and Laurent Dassault Rond-Point, with support from Canal+ and participation from Ciné+ and France Télévisions. French distribution is handled by Metropolitan Filmexport.
Born in Paris on October 31, 1937, Claude Lelouch is a prolific filmmaker whose career spans over six decades. Known for his diverse body of work, Lelouch has directed more than 60 feature films, along with numerous television films, commercials, and scopitones (early music videos). His internationally acclaimed film “A Man and a Woman” won the Palme d’Or at Cannes and two Oscars in 1967. Lelouch’s films often explore themes such as love, friendship, and human passion, blending grand spectacle with intimate storytelling.
The 81st Venice International Film Festival will run from August 28 to September 7, 2024, directed by Alberto Barbera.
