The Global Strategic Director of Barco Cinema in is masterclass paints a vibrant future for cinema projection, blending innovation with immersive experiences.
The fifth day for the delegates began with a focus on the evolution of HDR technology at the 55th International Film Festival of India, held at the Kala Academy in Goa. In the first masterclass of the day, Anthon Muller, Global Strategic Director of Barco Cinema, provided valuable insights into the future of post-production and projection. He discussed Barco’s patented HDR technology, shedding light on its potential impact in the industry.
Anthon began by captivating the audience with an engaging audio-visual presentation that explored the impact of HDR technology in cinema. This was followed by a half-hour immersive session that aimed to simplify the complex topic for attendees.
In the current high-definition era, individuals are increasingly exposed to LED and QLED screens. Additionally, many are utilising HDR screens on devices such as iPhones and iPads, which have gained significant popularity among users. In the field of Cinema Projection, the integration of post-production work utilising advanced laser technology, as well as High Dynamic Range (HDR), represents a groundbreaking development.
Recent statistics from Anthon reveal that a staggering 99% of post-production houses across the globe continue to rely on lamp-based setups. In a bid to transform the current landscape, Anthon has outlined a three-pronged strategy in collaboration with Barco. He stated, “We have three form strategy: Educate Moviegoers, Entice Post-Production Houses and Encourage Exhibition Halls.”
Throughout the masterclass, Anthon emphasised the benefits of utilising HDR in comparison to SDR, supporting his assertions with a range of examples, illustrations, and statistics. The audience was captivated as they journeyed from lamp-based projection to laser-based HDR, navigating through the advancements of digital projection technology.
The introduction of Laser HDR technology is poised to represent a significant advancement over the current SDR standards in the realm of filmmaking and cinematic experiences. According to claims made by Anthon, the approach is expected to be significantly more cost-effective. Anthon stated that his continuous exposure to Barco’s HDR at work has led to a deterioration in his taste. He is in the process of upgrading his entire home screening system to a laser-based HDR model.
Anthon acknowledged the necessity for moviegoers to receive additional insights into the technology in the days ahead. Barco has made significant strides by launching for the first time in the United States and recently in London. Additionally, the company has secured six titles that will be produced and showcased using their setup.
Anthon stated that improved colour grading and contrast provide Barco Technology with enhanced flexibilities during a recent inquiry. The statement clarifies that there is no intention to discourage future generations from appreciating classic works in Black and White. The introduction of a palette featuring deeper blacks and brighter whites is set to enhance the viewing experience of monochrome films. This technological advancement promises to create a more immersive experience for audiences in the near future.
