From timeless classics to modern restoration efforts, the Kapoor legacy continues to inspire generations at the heart of Indian cinema.
The International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa commemorated the centenary of legendary actor Raj Kapoor with a special session that included a notable appearance by his grandson, Ranbir Kapoor. This event highlighted the enduring legacy of Raj Kapoor in the Indian film industry.
Ranbir Kapoor remarked that Raj Kapoor’s films transcended mere entertainment, emphasising their role in conveying significant narratives that resonated deeply with audiences. “In the face of challenges, including the film ‘MeraNaam Joker’, my grandfather maintained a strong connection with the audience and embraced daring opportunities.”

He urged artistes to leverage their platforms to tackle pressing global issues such as climate change and to promote awareness through their creative endeavours.
Ranbir highlighted Raj Kapoor’s forward-thinking approach as a filmmaker. He said the themes in Awara tackled issues of casteism, whereas Shree 420 explored the concepts of greed and ambition. Subsequent films like Prem Rog and Ram Teri Ganga Maili received acclaim for their moral storytelling focused on women’s issues and societal challenges.

Ranbir addressed the current initiatives aimed at the restoration of Raj Kapoor’s films, highlighting a partnership with the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC), the National Film Archives of India (NFAI), and the Film Heritage Foundation.
It has been announced that ten films featuring the legendary Raj Kapoor have undergone restoration, with a scheduled release set for December 2024 across India. He emphasised the significance of preserving and celebrating the cinematic brilliance of Raj Kapoor, acknowledging his foundational contributions to Indian cinema.
At the conclusion of the event, Ranbir expressed his appreciation to IFFI for hosting the tribute, urging the audience to revisit and celebrate the enduring legacy of Raj Kapoor’s works.

Rahul Rawail contributed to Ranbir’s observations, emphasising the enduring impact of Raj Kapoor on both the film industry and society as a whole.
The session featured notable attendees including Sanjay Jaju, Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting; Shekhar Kapur, renowned Indian filmmaker and Festival Director of IFFI; Prithul Kumar, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and Managing Director of NFDC; along with Vrunda Desai, Joint Secretary (Films) of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
